A REVIEW OF SOVIET RESEARCH ON THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM EFFECTS OF IONIZING RADIATIONS

1. Brief reviews are presented of a number of Societ scientific papers on the CNS effects of radiation, most of which are not available in translation.n2. The Soviets consider the CN5 as being highly sensitive to radiation and have reported work implicating it at general levels of a few or tens of roentgens, several hundred rand 500-1000 r.n3. A major Soviet theoretical contribution on CNS effects of radiation deals with pathology resulting from an increased flow of impulses from the periphery following irradiation. Treatment is being considered from this viewpoint.n4. The role of the nervous system in radiation pathogenesis continues to be studied intensively in the USSR, though there is perhaps a less formal reliance on Pavlovian “nervism.”n5. It is concluded that confirmation of a number of the above exieriments is urgently needed.
