Due to the increased demand for cellu¬lose for use in the manufacture of mili¬tary-grade nitrocelluloses to meet mobili¬zation requirements it was foreseen that not enough cotton linters and sulfite wood pulp would be available. Since consider¬ably more sulfate wood pulp is produced annually than sulfite wood pulp, and since the former was used with only limited success during World War II, con¬tracts were negotiated with pulp sup¬pliers and a nitrating concern to deter¬mine the characteristics of sulfate wood pulp required for military use.nNitrocelluloses prepared by a commer¬cial nitrating plant were evaluated at Picatinny Arsenal in the manufacture of IMR, Ml, and M2 artillery and OGK rocket propellants.
