The heat flow meter has been developed for many applications. One development has resulted in small, compact, low-inertia, disk-type in¬struments which are portable and quickly applied to the surface of a body (1, 2, 3, 27, 28). By utilizing a large number of thermo-junctions per unit area, the sensitivity of these disks can be made to be quite high (3). More conventional development of the heat meter has resulted in designs which are useful for the determination of thermal conductivity of materials, heat flow through composite structures and at surfaces (11, 23, 36, 44, 52, 54, 55). The particular application of the heat meter to soil heat flow measurement is reported by Vehrencamp (54). Important analytical studies of the readjustment of heat flow when a heat meter is applied at a surface is given by Boelter et al (10), An important ob-servation that the heat meter may seriously interfere with the moisture movement in soils is made by Lettau (43).
