The method followed in this succession of paragraphs is in a way opposite to the method of the “black box” so dear to some cyberneticists, in the sense that here the box is first opened and its structure studied in full daylight, and then questions are asked about “how could it possibly be used” in the mechanisms which we know from observation and experiment.
