For several years the Navy has been developing cables having a high degree of fire resistance combined with imperviousness to water. These cables have been developed to the point where they will remain in operation for several hours in a fire severe enough to consume all the organic material in the cable. Under such conditions the cables will not withstand immersion but will with¬stand a degree of exposure to humid environments.nSince no information was available concerning the performance of the cables under severe spray, similar to the spray used for combatting shipboard fires, without immersion, the Material Laboratory subjected 54 representative samples of fire resistant cable to simultaneous fire and salt spray in an attempt to simulate shipboard fires and subsequent damage control measures.
