A rather thorough, search for new techniques of measuring residual stresses has been conducted. This search has included a study of various physical phenomena which exhibit some stress dependent relationship. Of the many phenomena studied, ultrasonics was chosen for further experimental investigation. It has been definitely established that residual stresses in metals can cause double refraction of a polarized shear wave. A technique, based on the double refraction of shear waves, for measuring the average stress through certain specimens is described and sources of error are dis¬cussed. The interaction of two ultrasonic waves in metals has been investi¬gated also.
