Development of an Operational Preservative Hydraulic Brake Fluid

The object of this study was to develop a combination preservative and operational fluid for use in automotive hydraulic brake systems and components.nBrake fluid components were selected which were known to have good pre-servative properties. Combinations of these components were subjected to tests outlined in Specification VV-H-910. The more promising fluids were stored with brake parts in warehouse and simulated vehicle storage. From the preliminary results received in the storage tests, a fluid combination was chosen. Different inhibitor combinations were tried until maximum corrosion protection and stability could be obtained.nThe fluid outlined in this report meets al1 requirements of Specifica¬tion VV-H-910 except the sub-zero requirements. It is satisfactory with natural and SBR synthetic rubber cups. It tolerates up to 5% moisture. It performs satisfactorily in the stroking machine at 158℉. It has satis¬factorily passed storage tests up to 30 months.nA proposed specification has been written for the fluid.
