DETERMINATION OF SAMPLE SIZES FOR TESTING OF MIL-P-10831A, TYPE I TARGET PAPER

Basis weight, machine and cross direction tearing re¬sistance and thickness properties were determined on a 1,000,000 pound lot of MIL-P-10831A, Type I target paper. Five hundred individual determinations were made on each property. The distribution of basis weight and tearing re¬sistance values was found to be normal. Based upon the variance associated with each property value, estimations were made of the number of determinations required to yield a sample average that, with 0.05 probability, will be within specified intervals around the lot average. For intervals of ± 1, 2 or 3 pounds around the basis weight average, 75, 19 or 8 determinations are required, respectively. For in¬tervals of ± 1, 2 or 3 grams around the average for tearing resistance, approximately 140, 35 or 15 determinations are required, respectively. For intervals of ± 0.0001, 0.0002, 0.0003 or 0.0004 inches around the thickness average 157, 39, 17 or 10 determinations are required, respectively.
