The mechanisms of impurity transport through a solid in a tempera-ture gradient are listed and discussed. The heat of transport, electric field effects, distillation phenomena, and grain boundary effects must be considered. Usually, the drive toward uniform fugacity or chemical potential is the domi¬nant force acting on impurities.
