Studies on Base Nickels for Oxide Coated Cathodes

An attempt is made to unify the results which have developed from the thermionic studies carried on in this laboratory. The picture of the operation of an oxide cathode which is developed differs from those previously advanced primarily as a result of the observation that the donors in the coating are not volatile. Consequently it is possible to develop a stable donor configura¬tion, provided that donor destruction processes are eliminated. While a continuous donor production process would not be required in such a case, it should be noted that in a non-ideal situation the donor concentration will represent a dynamic balance between donor production and destruction processes.
