Computation of the Longitudinal Salinity Distribution in a Delaware Estuary for Various Degrees of River Inflow Regulation

Modifications of river inflow to the Delaware Estuary in accordance with the proposals of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, as summarized in Table 1, would have only slight effects upon the springtime minimum salinities but rather marked effects on the fall maximum in salinities in the estuary. The differences between the Modal Flow Case and Modified Case 1 or 2 amount to only a few tenths of a mille at the time of the spring minimum, though Modified Case 3 has a spring minimum salinity about 1. 6 % higher than that of the corresponding Modal Flow Case. This value occurs in the central stretch of the estuary, and the difference decreases toward the head and toward the mouth of the estuary.
