摘要

This report briefly surveys the highlights of the work done at Rutgers, The State University, on a study of simultaneous corrosion and hydrogen embrittlement inhibition on S.A.E. 1095 steel. Present contracts are DA-630-069-ORD-1680 and 1689. The writer proposes a quantitative theory of hydrogen embrittlement inhibition. This states that this type of inhibition is proportional to the fraction of anodic area covered by the inhibitor(s). The equation obtained is in good-agreement with experimental data obtained at Rutgers University. He also proposes a quantitative theory of corrosion inhibition, similarly in accord with experimental data. This states the inhibition is due to the potential that is set up between the anodic and cathodic adsorbed inhibitor(s) and that this potential opposes the corrosion potential. The direction which further work should take is indicated.
