On the basis of brief theoretical analyses it is shown that packaging materials with constant restoring force characteris¬tics can result in better vibration and shock isolation than materials with more nearly linear force-displacement behavior. Theoretical models of constant restoring force materials involving buckled linkages and columnar configurations are proposed and analyzed. Realizations of these models are dis¬cussed, and results of static and dynamic tests are presented for some experimental configurations. It is shown that the materials developed so far are capable of effecting consider¬able weight or volume savings over commonly used foams, particularly for packaging either very delicate or very massive items.
