FILTERABILITY OF DISTILLATE FUELS PART I-DEVELOPMENT OF METHODS AND EFFECT OF FILTER POROSITY

It was found that the porosity of the filter medium has a major effect on the volume of fuel that can be filtered. Variations in porosity affect the reproducibility of plugging volumes. Relative porosities were determined and applied to correct plugging volumes to a standard porosity so that the filtration characteristics of fuels could be determined under comparable conditions. Most of the studies were made at a fixed temperature since it was found that a variation in temperature also affected the plugging volume.
