LITERATURE REVIEW ELECTRON MICROSCOPY OF METALLIC SURFACES:A SURVEY OF INSTRUMENTION AND TECHNIQUES

The following discussion of electron microscopy is a review ofnpublished literature on:n(l) current instrumentationn(2) techniques employed in observing specimensn(3) preparation specimensn(4) electron diffractionn(5) current research programs, funded by government contractsnThis report is concerned principally with untreated metallic surfaces; the instrumentation and methods applicable to the observation of such surface phenomena. Since interest was focused on this segment of electron microscopy, the extensive literature dealing with the structural analysis of metals, alloys, and crystals, as well as the other broad areas of the appli¬cation of electron microscopy, e.g., examination of polymeric, fibrous and nonmetallic materials, biological studies, etc., have been omitted wherever possible. In those instances where structural studies are reviewed, such items are included in order to offer a better view of the capabilities of an instrument or technique.
