To determine the feasibility of adapting currently available propulsion systems to improve the efficiency of merchant vessel powering systems, Davidson Laboratory requested Robert Taggart, Inc. and Hydronautics, Inc. to determine the state-of-development of marine propulsion systems and of the newly developed supercavitating and ventilated propellers, respectively.nThis survey was limited to an assessment of the performance of existing propeller-stern configurations and was based on data from scale-model tests. There remains the very distinct possibility that as-yet-undreamed-of efficiencies might be obtained by a rationally integrated propeller-stern design technique. In addition, recent research on propulsion quantities (wake fraction, thrust deduction, propeller effic¬iency)' has shown that greater reliability should be sought In the prediction of full-scale performance from scale model data.
