The purpose of the Standards Laboratory Practices Notebook is to provide a source of information pertaining to various phases of laboratory operation. In the history of operating laboratories many problems have arisen and their solutions have been found. This experience has been summarized in a series of practical operating notes and presented in this Notebook. It is hoped through the use of this document and its expected additions, that many pitfalls can be avoided.nSafety, which is commonly given only cursory attention, is treated in some detail and given the importance it deserves in the laboratory.nThe Chapters on Laboratory Facilities and Laboratory Oper¬ation are not intended to be complete treatises on the subjects, but just what the title implies, a series of notes.nA glossary of Metrology (measurement) terms has been pro¬vided to promote a common meaning to the descriptive laboratory language.nThis notebook will be revised and expanded, as new inform¬ation is made available. All participating laboratories are invited to send comments, suggestions, additions, etc., to the Metrology Department, Bureau of Naval Weapons Representative, Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant, 1675 West Fifth Street, Pomona, California.nThe information contained in this report is intended solely for utilization in the Navy Calibration Program. Reference to the quality or suitability of any commercial equipment dis¬cussed in this report is therefore applicable only to its use in the Navy Calibration Program and does not reflect upon the suitability of the equipment for usage outside of the program. Also, it is not intended that this report reflect upon the quality of other instruments produced by a given manufacturer, or upon his reputation.
