Review of Positioning Systems on Mohole Project

The use of radar and sonar systems has been fairly well established for positioning the Mohole drill ship. It is deemed desirable to investigate briefly other possible systems and to determine if any alternates are available. In the ocean, acoustic propagation is the only known means of ranging; in the air, however, a great many radio frequency systems exist that might be applicable. This report is intended to cover not only the possible systems, but to establish general guidelines for the design of those selected. (Author)
