This report presents a series of studies on several variations of the Particle-In-Cell method as applied to the solution of problems in compressible fluid flow. A Sharp Shock procedure is formulated which allows for the propagation of sharp discontinuities at the wave fronts in the media without the spreading effects associated with the usual Particle-In-Cell approaches. The method is illustrated by applications to simulated excavation problems in one dimensional space-time geometries. The mathematical formulation of a two dimensional space-time problem involving a hydrodynamic model for the extreme close-in region of a nuclear explosion is also presented, together with an outline of the general computer formulation and flow charts for the problem.
