Continuous experimentation utilizing a 3- by 36-foot rotary kiln was conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of simultaneous induration and reduction of magnetic taconite concentrate. Lignite, or lignite-anthracite mixtures, and green magnetite pellets (64.2 percent Fe, dry basis) were heated in a rotary kiln to about 2,100F. After separation from excess reductant, the product pellets were found to be highly reduced and acceptably hard. A total of 140 tons of prereduced pellets with an average Fe content of 79.0 percent was produced and smelted in the experimental blast furnace. (Author)
