Testing Syntactic Foam Buoyancy Materials. Progress Report No. 4

The entire series of test specimens from two Type II Modules have been machined. All ambient temperature hydrostatic, compressive, shear, tensile and flexural tests have been conducted on uncoated specimens. All coated test specimens have been submitted for testing. A heating and cooling unit has been installed on our Baldwin machine and the various tests to be conducted at 130F are nearly complete. Two 24 inch x 24 inch x 2.5 inch panels from which the required test specimens are being machined as part of the secondary task. Research and development work with 6 inch x 6 inch x 2.5 inch castings has continued on new syntactic foam compounds and on new processing techniques. A technique has been developed for casting to size quite accurately thereby reducing major machining operations.
