摘要

Granular, activated carbon in packed-bed column contactors was shown to remove much of the organic matter including alkylbenesulfonate from municipal waste water. The COD of a secondary effluent was reduced to about 12 to 20 ppm and the ABS was removed almost entirely. When an ABS break-through concentration of 0.5 ppm is used as a criterion of carbon exhaustion, the amount of carbon required for countercurrent contacting is less than 1 pound per 1,000 gallons. For the process to be economical the carbon must be reactivated and re-used. Thermal reactivation in a steam-air atmosphere was found to be technically feasible. With reactivation, the total cost of carbon adsorption was estimated to be less than 10 cents per 1,000 gallons for plants treating 10 mgd of waste water. (Author)
