Project Mohole-Phase II. Stage 'A' Report. Testing of Sidewall Coring Tool

The results of the tests clearly reveal that the concept of the sidewall coring tool for use in Project Mohole is feasible and practical, that it may be designed to operate satisfactorily on the end of a logging cable in the Mohole environment, and that a 5-foot long triangular sidewall core specimen, approximately 1-1/2 inches to the side at its cross section, may be cut in a hole having a minimum diameter of 7-5/8 inches. It also was established that other complementary downhole equipment, such as an orientation device or a standard logging sonde, could be operated in conjunction with the sidewall coring tool. The design parameters and general tool configuration for a prototype sidewall coring tool applicable to Project Mohole are submitted for consideration. (Author)
