摘要

The Fodder Conservation Section, CSIRO, was established in 1958. The immediate availability of trained staff enabled fodder conservation studies to be undertaken on a broad front. In recent years, the research was devoted to an intensive investigation of forage plant chemistry, pathways and mechanisms of moisture movement during hay curing, post-harvest physiology of pasture species, and the biochemistry and microbiology of ensilage. The results were of value to agricultural scientists responsible for advisory and extension work in fodder conservation, and for several years the Section maintained close contact with State Departments of Agriculture, particularly with the Victorian Department. This close association was also valuable to the Section in that its scientists were kept acquainted with the multitude of problems encountered in the field and were able to orientate their investigations accordingly. During the latter half of 1964, investigations by the Fodder Conservation Section were concluded. It thus seemed appropriate to prepare an outline account and bibliography of the work conducted by the Section. (Author)
