Effect of Initial Moisture Content on Performance of Hardwood Pallets.

The wooden pallet industry is big, competitive, and growing. Annual wooden pallet sales in 1963 were more than 312 times greater than in 1949. Pro- duction of about 71,587,000 wooden pallets required more than 5 percent of the lumber produced in the United States in 1963. The U.S. Forest Service has cooperated for many years with various industrial organizations and military agencies in wood pallet research. Information gained from both applied and basic research indicates that one of the many factors affecting the durability of wooden pallets is the moisture content of the parts at the time of assembly.
