A characteristics solution for the flow field of an underexpanded, two-dimensional jet issuing from a nozzle with uniform exit conditions was developed and programmed for the IBM 7074 system. The theoretical centerplane Mach number distribution and the theoretical boundaries of the two-dimensional jets issuing from a sonic nozzle were computed. A new criterion for the prediction of the Riemann wave was attempted. The effects of the operating pressure ratio on the shock structure of a single, underexpanded, two-dimensional jet flow from a sonic nozzle were recorded. A modification was established in the flow model for the transverse impingement of a two-dimensional side jet onto an underexpanded, two-dimensional main jet flow. The acoustic emission characteristics of the transversely impinging jets were also briefly investigated.
