Investigation of Corrosion in Hot Sea Water in an Experimental Loop Apparatus

It has been demonstrated that the precise chemical control of the incoming seawater to the hot seawater plant can be automated. When acid is used to remove the carbonate ion, scale formation is minor at 250 F. For completely deaerated seawater at neutral pH, corrosion is minimized under carbonate-free conditions. Each of the metals studied in hot neutral deaerated seawater showed general or local attacks under some conditions. The corrosion rate for steel is accelerated by a temperature increase, even when oxygen levels and pH are optimized for minimum corrosivity. Between 200 and 300 F, the rate appears to double. The metals studied were the following: low-alloy steel; Stainless steel 430; Austenitic stainless steels; Aluminum alloys; Titanium, and Hastelloy C.
