Highway Signing Research. Phase II. Characterization of Sign-Facing Materials

Laboratory and field tests were performed in order to develop information on which to judge the adequacy of current performance specifications for sign-facing materials. The areas investigated included; durability, mechanism of deterioration, photometric properties, cleanability, method and ease of fabrication, physical and mechanical properties, and the selection and development of photometric instrumentation. The findings indicate some inadequacies in current sign performance specifications, particularly as to definition of service requirements. Reflectance of signing materials should receive primary consideration as a basis for rating the performance and serviceability of signs. Color change was not a critical problem. The principal reason for replacement of signs appears to be loss of reflectance.
