A Study on a New Method of Purifying System Oil for Marine Diesel Engine

This paper is reports on the results of the laboratory and field tests carried out in an effort to find a new purification system of the system oil of a marine Diesel engine. Chemical engineering technique were employed in these tests on the deterioration or contamination of the system oil, the coagulation of the impurities or sludge components in the oil, and the oil purifying method. The following are the results of the tests. (1) In the case of using an ultracentrifuge, impurities or sludge components are found within the range of particle diameters 0.5 to 5 microns. (2) Separating efficiency of the purifier is within the range of 20% or less. (3) In order to keep the system oil in a good condition, it is necessary to adopt some chemical treatment for purification of the system oil. (4) When alkaline solution (about 0.5 kg) is added to one ton of system oil, the impurities or sludge components in the oil coagulate. And in the case of continuours purification, the alkaline solution to be added may be 0.3 kg or less. (5) Alkaline solutions of 5 to 10% concentration should be used. (6) Chemical treatment was done in the purification process at 50 C or over and for the period of 10 to 15 minutes. (7) Except in the case of emulsions, it is desirable to wash the system oil with 5 to 10% of hot water. (Author)
