Rubella virus CF and HA antigens were produced employing BHK-21 cell cultures. Antigens were chromatographed on Sephadex G-200 columns and treated with proteolytic and nucleic acid destroying enzymes. A single HA antigen and a single CF antigen from untreated and aqueous phase ether treated cell pack material were demonstrated and shown to be sensitive to trypsin but not to DNase and RNase. Adaptation of rubella virus to avian tissue culture systems and embryonated hens' eggs is underway. Temperature adaptation of rubella virus to AGMK tissue culture is proceeding. Antigenicity studies of either treated rubella subunits are being performed in monkeys. Attenuated rubella virus strains were lyophilized, encapsulated and administered orally to monkeys. Interferon characterization of rubella strains under study was completed. A plaque assay system for rubella in RK-13, RK-1 and rabbit cornea cells was developed. (Author)
