The research was undertaken for a combination of scientific and practical reasons. It is believed that more specific knowledge about these phenomena, which are inescapable parts of our living system, will prove beneficial. Benefits can stem from vehicle design, highway design and control, and from driver performance. Such benefits could comprise greater safety and economy and reduced air pollution.
