The construction details of a field experiment to evaluate various jointing patterns and joint sealants in rigid pavements are presented. The test sections are located on both an untreated swelling subgrade and on a lime treated subgrade. The research features include comparisons of unsealed joints with joints sealed with open cell preformed neoprene, standard rubberized asphalt, and rubberized epoxy. The eight-inch thick pavement has some sawed joints spaced at 15 feet and others on an alternating random sequence of 13, 19, 18, and 12 feet. Provisions were also made to measure joint openings and observe the performance of expansion joints sealed with preformed neoprene. (Author)
