Rapid Means of Determining Density and Moisture Content of Soils and Granular Materials

The report contains a general review of several test procedures which were evaluated in detail in the Phase I report. Detailed data and procedures are given for the recommended alcohol burning and calcium carbide gas-pressure methods of determining moisture content. For density measuring methods, further details are given for a coring device used in conjunction with a water balloon apparatus. A vibratory compaction procedure was evaluated in an outdoor test area to measure the relative compaction of a crushed stone base material. Other field tests which showed limited applications were a dynamic penetrometer and a dynamic attenuation procedure. Initial feasibility studies on acoustic absorption, ultrasonic attenuation and rebound hammer measurements gave fruitless results and were abandoned. (Author)
