Subcutaneous Implantation of Silastic Rod with Dacron Cuff Compared with Silastic Rod Alone. Bladder Healing Experiment with Aluminum Sutures Versus Catgut Sutures

A new type of stabilizer for the arteriovenous shunts to be used in chronic hemodialysis patients was tried and observed in 20 rabbits. All proved successful as evidenced by firm fixation without infection or sinus formation. The four controls with silastic rods alone showed 50 percent infection and 100 percent non-fixation to the subcutaneous tissue. Aluminum and catgut sutures compared in the bladder healing in 72 animals by tensiometry and histopathology. No significant superiority of aluminum could be proved. Six cases of aluminum were found with concretions formation which indicates its calculogenetic potentiality being a non-absorbable suture playing as a foreign body in the urothelial world. (Author)
