A study was made of the polyurethanes resulting from the reaction of various polyisocyanates and polyhydroxy compounds as elements of dental restoratives. The adhesion of these materials to human dentin was examined, when employed as bulk restoratives, when applied as cavity liners prior to acrylic or epoxy restoratives, or when mixed with acrylic or epoxy restoratives. The effect of the adhesion of several restorative formulations to human dentin was studied, in which the dentin was pretreated with a number of inorganic reagents such as ammonia, phosphoric acid, or potassium hexafluorozirconate, or when pretreated with diisocyanates. Also examined were the effects on adhesion when polyurethanes were mixed with gelatin, a crotonic acid-vinyl acetate copolymer (Gelva C3V10) or with organic acids such as sorbic or linoleic, as were the influence of calcium hydroxide, diatomaceous earth, hydroxyapatite, or colloidal silica fillers in polyurethanes. Extensive work was done on the water resistance of polyurethane restorations and cast polyurethane films; the effects of immersion in water for up to four months were examined. (Author)
