The NIH Artificial Kidney - Chronic Uremia program has devoted a number of its contracts to the development of membrane materials which would ultimately exhibit improved characteristics of mass transport and mechanical durability when used in hemodialysis equipment. The work discussed in this report is concerned with the development of a standard test method. The objective of this work is to propose an economical means of obtaining data on the permeation characteristics of membranes so that meaningful comparisons and appraisals of membrane materials are possible. The report delineates the design considerations for the test method. This discussion points to the need for a standard test cell. The features of the cell, measurements performed to determine its characteristics, and methods of fabrication are described in detail. Measurement techniques which were developed to characterize and utilize the test cell are discussed. The proposed standard test methods for measuring the diffusive permeability and the ultrafiltration pressure coefficient of membranes intended for use in hemodialysis equipment are also described.
