The Repair of Spalled Concrete Surfaces with Thin Concrete Patches: An Experiment on Trunk Road A.34 at Stafford

Following earlier experiments in the laboratory and on minor roads, extensive areas of experimental concrete and cement-mortar patches 6 mm (1/4 in) and 13 mm (1/2 in) thick were laid on a heavily trafficked trunk road. Defective concrete was removed by a bush-hammering process and the repair materials laid both by hand using a vibrating screed and by cement gun. The condition of the patches after more than eight years under heavy traffic is excellent and indicates that thin concrete patches provide an effective method of repairing spalled concrete surface.
