Reverse-Governing of Diesel Engines for Optimizing Vehicle Power-Pack Performance

A systematic analysis of speed-torque characteristics inherent in a turbocharged diesel engine has revealed that a turbocharged engine is not a constant torque machine. It is instead a machine that could yield potentially increased torques when the engine speeds are decreased within limited operational speed ranges. The system of fuel injection and governing developed to achieve this torque characteristic is termed 'reverse-governing' and its advantages especially when used in locomotives with mechanical transmissions achieving optimum power-pack performance and efficiency are discussed. The refinements of 'reverse-governing' to shift and relocate best areas of diesel engine operation to suit inservice conditions are made known along with the specific example of the Maybach MD-435 engine.
