Elastic Strain Pulse Produced by the Sudden Application of a Radially Distributed Stress to the End of a Cylindrical Bar

The propagation of longitudinal elastic waves in a semi-infinite cylindrical bar is investigated when the stress applied to the end of the bar has a step function time dependence and a radial dependence of the form P Subscript o(p+1) (1- (r/a) squared) quantity to pth. The external parameter p allows the applied stress to approach, at one extreme, a delta function centered on the bar axis and, at the other extreme, a uniform load over the bar face. (Author)
