The apparent ability of many dielectric materials to collect a volume and a surface charge upon the application of a potential difference and then to gradually release this charge upon the removal of the potential difference has long defied complete explanation. The chief difficulty has been that so many interrelated mechanisms are involved that it has been difficult to separate their effects for individual study. A means of separating the charging current, called the dielectric absorption current, into long and short-time constant components and a method of computing the activation energies of these components is outlined in this paper. This method of studying the behavior of the activation energies of the components of dielectric absorption currents should prove a useful tool in the development of a more complete theory of the behavior of dielectrics.
