The Detrital Mineralogy of Surface Sediments of the Ocean Floor in the Area of the Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica

The detrital mineralogy of the 62 to 125 micron size fraction of 67 samples from sediments adjacent to the Antarctic Peninsula, was used to determine three sedimentary provinces: the sediments of the eastern Bellingshausen Sea, and the sediments surrounding and associated with the South Shetland Islands. Ice rafting is considered the primary mode of transport, although in rare instances deep currents appear to have concentrated heavy minerals into placer or lag deposits. (Author)
