Cleaning of Skin from Radioactive Contamination by Washing and Sweating

In recent years the possibility of radioactive contamination of the skin has become an important problem in civil defence and industrial medicine. In connection with civil defence activities the possibility of employing sauna bathing for removal of contamination has been contemplated. However, no data based on scientific investigation have been available concerning the suitability and efficiency of this cleaning method. In view of the great commonness of sauna facilities in Finland and their excellent suitability for mass cleaning purposes, preliminary studies were conducted on the cleaning of the skin with the aid of washing and sauna bathing.
