Influence of Temperature and Other Climatic Factors on the Performance of Soil-Pavement Systems

As a precondition for a meaningful engineering assessment of the influence of normal climatic temperature variations on the performance of soil-pavement systems, it is necessary to assemble and coordinate data obtained on such systems under field conditions. The planners of the AASHO Road Test included in their program a comprehensive study of climatic and other environmental factors such as location of the ground water table, depth of frost penetration, and temperature of the air, pavement, and ground. This permitted a study of the interrelation of these factors with type, thickness, and load bearing characteristics of pavement and base structures. Typical climatic and environmental data obtained during the AASHO Road Test is summarized. (BPR abstract)
