摘要

Experimental sections of thin bituminous surfacings were laid on the Dumfries-Kilmarnock trunk road, which carried some 500 commercial vehicles a day in 1950, and also on the Irvine-Stewarton road, B. 769, which carried only about 45 commercial vehicles per day of traffic. The objects of the experiments were to compare the performance of different types of thin surfacing, ranging from open-textured to dense materials, under the weather conditions of the south-west of Scotland, and to find the most suitable ranges of binder content for each type of material, when used for resurfacing a trunk road and a minor rural road. The aggregates used were basalt, granite and blast-furnace slag from local sources. The report gives the results of the experiment based on visual assessments. The ranges of binder content found most suitable for each type of material on roads carrying 500 and 45 commercial vehicles a day are given. (Author)
