Design of Rigid Boundary Energy Dissipating Structures

Laboratory investigations were made of the degree of dissipation of energy of high-velocity flow from a culvert attained in rigid boundary basins preceding a hydraulic jump eventually formed by downstream channel controls. Three types of basins were studied; a flared basin with smooth floor and vertical walls, a wide rectangular basin with smooth floor and vertical walls, and a similar basin with rectangular roughness elements on the floor and with smooth walls. Design data reported include the flow distribution and local velocities on smooth floors, the rate of loss of energy due to roughness elements, and means for determining the location of a hydraulic jump in the zone following the expansion of the width of flow .
