The report describes the construction and instrumentation of a full-scale trial in which the compressive stresses in four long slabs constructed without expansion joints are being measured using Glotzl stress gauges. Two of the trial slabs are 1,000 ft and the other two are 4,000 ft long. Preliminary measurements made on the first of the shorter slabs, constructed in the autumn of 1966, are discussed. In the summer of 1967 the maximum compressive stresses measured were less than 400 lb/sq in. (28 bar). The end of this slab is restrained only by adjacent flexible construction. Other slabs, in which measurements have now commenced, are constrained by normal expansion joints at their ends. (Author)
