A formulation of the governing equations for shells of arbitrary shape of transversely isotropic materials accounting for thermal strains across the shell thickness and transverse shear deformation is presented. This set of equations is then solved for the case of a noncircular cylinder using an asymptotic expansion procedure. The method uses two asymptotic series, which combined with the particular solutions, give the total solution. The final form of the solution presented contains the arbitrary functions to be determined from the boundary conditions. The solution for the special case of a shell of isotropic material is also given. (Author)
