A Comparison of Dynamic Pile Driving Formulas with the Wave Equation

The use of the wave equation to investigate the behavior of piling during driving has become more and more popular in the past several years. However, the use of the wave equation requires the use of a high speed digital computer. In contrast, a dynamic pile driving formula requires no computer, and it can be quickly and easily applied at the job site. Chellis and others have suggested that the wave equation be used to determine if there might exist ranges of application through which simplified dynamic formulas are reasonably accurate, thus avoiding the necessity of an access to a computer to obtain reliable and economic results. This report presents the results of such a study and demonstrates that it is indeed possible to find ranges of agreement between the wave equation and certain pile driving formulas. (Author)
