摘要

The results of 28 acute experiments in animals with presumably normal circulation and of 10 'chronic' experiments in which the Avco Mechanical Auxiliary Ventricle was implanted in animals were reported. No animal survived the period of anesthesia and surgery; therefore, the device has not been tested in a way the developer had planned that it would be used. The insertion of the MAV leads to such profound changes in the normal circulation that it is difficult, and perhaps impossible, to assess whether use of the MAV leads to circulatory improvements. Increase in stroke volume of the MAV leads to increased cardiac output. Systolic gradients exist across the MAV when it is not being used for pumping. (Author)
