Dogs: Toxicity of the Intravenous (I.V.) Administration of the Control Vehicle for Picolinaldehyde, 5-Hydroxy-Thiosemicarbazone (Nsc-107 392)

The 2 dogs receiving I.V. injections of 2.5 ml/kg (single dose or for 5 consecutive days) exhibited reversible derangements of the urine tests. The appearance of red blood cells in the urine occurring in 1 of them on days 1 and 7 could have been drug-related, whereas, the proteinuria occurring in the other animal on day 78 appears to have been an incidental finding. In 1 of the 2 dogs treated with 2.5 ml/kg/day hyperventilation, tachycardia and generalized muscle spasms occurred (2/5 treatments). Laboratory tests, with the exception of the reversible erythrocyturia in the dog receiving 2.5 ml/kg x 1, did not reveal any important dose-related changes in hematology, blood chemistry and/or urine tests. The I.V. injection of 1.25 ml/kg/day failed to lead to any toxic manifestations. (Author)
